Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars" speech
On March 23, 1983, president Ronald Reagan gave his famous "Star Wars" speech. The purpose of this speech was primarily to gain support from the American citizens for his proposed defense budget that he had submitted to Congress.
Reagan explained why he believed his proposal was necessary with many references to the safety and security of America, and explained why he believed there was a threat. He stated that a well-funded nuclear budget is "the deterrence of aggession through the promise of retaliation." This theory was believed to be an important strategy to use in the new nuclear and technological age. To gain support for his new budget, Reagan also pointed out that the Soviet Union was a major threat as their military power increased. "The Soviets have enough power accurate and powerful nuclear weapons to destroy virtually all of our missiles on the ground." These are the words Reagan used to explain the Soviet's threat on the United States. As well as the assurance of safety from this reform, the president also hinted that a major decision would be made that could benefit children. He said it was "a decision which affects a new hope for children in the 21st century." Overall, Reagan explained the Strategic Defense Initiative as a way of keeping the U.S. safe from foreign invasion. He described this as "A mission to counter the Soviet missile threat with measures that are defensive."
Therefore, the "Star Wars" speech was used to persuade the American people to be fully supportive of the Strategic Defense Initiative proposed by president Ronald Reagan.
